Project Description
From various locations throughout the Bay Area we have acquired a large amount of reclaimed redwood water tank lumber. Made from clear all heart redwood the staves generally measure 2-1/2″ x 5-1/4″, 2-1/2″x 7-1/4″ or 2-1/2″x 9-1/4″. The bottoms 2-1/2″x 7-1/4″, 2-1/2″x 9-1/4″, or 2-1/2″ x 11-1/4″.
Reclaimed redwood water tanks are still found on farms throughout the country and scatter the New York City skyline. Left alone, the interior faces of tank staves have a feathery, scaly appearance caused from years of use and varying liquid levels. After decades of exposure, the outsides have weathered to varying shades of grey. When milled, wonderful dark purples can appear from years of sediment intake.
The appeal of redwood lumber as a building material goes beyond its strength and beauty. Redwood is also resistant to decay and pests, thanks to the natural tannins which creates much of its unique color.

Research proves that “greenness” has a measurable impact on occupants. And not just in residential applications. Used in retail and hospitality, it enhances customer experiences. In healthcare it contributes to faster healing. In workspaces it promotes productivity and boosts morale. As urbanization continues, factoring these benefits into modern design is crucial. Reap the many benefits of wood by incorporating it in your next project.
